ANTIGONE

composer, music director, ass. sound designer

BOOK: SOPHOCLES

MUSIC AND MUSIC DIRECTION: BETHANY TENNICK

DIRECTION: JORDAN BLACKWOOD

ASSISTANT DIRECTION AND MOVEMENT: GENNA ALLAN

CAST: PERTH YOUTH THEATRE

This version of Antigone was conceived by Jordan Blackwood, and it was a sincere challenge and honour to write music for. We discovered that the young company of Perth held many budding actor-musicians, and so we worked live musical elements into the show. The percussive opening number featured a young timpani player, and we got to use several a capella interludes to showcase the rest of the cast, as well as fiddle underscored by another cast member. With a cast of 26, we also employed live foley and soundscapes, and used the technical elements of FX on mics to achieve incredible effects. Writing for a greek tragedy was wonderful, and it was incredibly interesting to do my first lyric-less score. I also MD’d the young cast and helped them with general voice work, and assisted the sound designer during tech and production.
